Secobarbital (BAR ) Metabolites Overdose / Abuse Urine Test Strip
Introduction
Barbiturates are members of a broad class of drugs called sedatives that have historically been prescribed for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and seizures; however, prolonged use at increasing doses may have severe health consequences, and may even exacerbate the symptoms that are originally prescribed to treat. There are different types of barbiturates that are generally categorized by how rapidly they work and how long they remain in an individual’s system . All barbiturates, regardless of these categorizations, are classified as controlled substances by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration due to their potential for abuse and dependence.
Secobarbital is the target compound for this test to detect at a cut off level of 300 ng/mL. Secobarbital is prescribed under the brand name Seconal, in oral capsule form, indicated as a hypnotic for the short-term treatment of insomnia and as a preanesthetic. In years past, Seconal was commonly misused as a recreational drug and was known by the slang name reds. Approximately 5% of a secobarbital dose of is excreted in the urine as unchanged secobarbital.
